Albenga to Ventimiglia; The Italian Riviera

45 miles of soft pedal on the coast.  My legs were quite tired, and the 1500 feet of elevation gain was noticed.  One particular climb in full sun and traffic was quite unpleasant.  We saw quite a few athletic cyclists training on the road in the morning and I think it takes a racer to ride the Riviera.  The combination of no shoulder, bus traffic, and frequently a rock wall at the right shoulder means you have to be able to ride a line.  We were relived to reach the bike path to San Remo.  This featured flowers, desert plants, and two bike path tunnels, one of which was over a kilometer long.  Nice and cool in the tunnel!  We saw two bike touring couples on the bike path loaded with colorful camping gear.

We spent the afternoon in San Remo enjoying a delicious lunch and a  wine induced nap in a garden.
Here is a store with my name.

One of the great thing about traveling by bicycle is that you can hear what is going on.  The sound of trumpets brought us to this sight: a colorful contest with bugles,  drum, and flags.

After watching that for a while, we checked out a Russian church and headed back to the bike path which was in use for a triathlon.  Once that finished up, we were on our way to Ventimiglia, the border town.  There was less traffic on the road in the afternoon - thank goodness!  Ironically, after a week of shining on us, the sun hid behind clouds when we went to the beach.  That didn't stop us from enjoying the sound of the waves and wondering what awesome trails these mountain bikers had been on behind the city.

Top food of the day: Rabbit and potatoes
